What is Deep drawing

The deep drawing die is mainly composed of a convex die, a concave die, and a edging ring. Under the action of the press, the convex mold gradually presses the circular billet into the concave mold, and its shape and size determine the inner surface shape of the workpiece after deep drawing. The concave die is the outer contour limitation of the blank deformation, and its inner wall shape is adapted to the outer surface of the deep drawn part. The function of the edge pressing ring is crucial, as it applies a certain amount of pressure on the flange surface of the billet to prevent wrinkling during the deep drawing process. Appropriate edge pressure can ensure stable deformation of the billet during the deep drawing process. Insufficient edge pressure cannot effectively suppress wrinkling, while excessive edge pressure can increase the friction between the billet and the mold, leading to billet tearing. At the same time, the fillet radius of the concave die cannot be ignored. If the fillet radius is too small, the billet will experience significant bending and tensile stress when passing through the fillet, which can easily lead to cracking; If the fillet radius is too large, although it is beneficial for the flow of the billet, it will affect the dimensional accuracy of the workpiece and may cause significant rebound of the billet during the deep drawing process.

There is a significant difference between deep drawing technology and punching technology. Punching mainly uses the sharp cutting edge of the mold to separate the material and obtain the desired shape of the part. During this process, a large amount of waste is generated, and the material utilization rate is relatively low. Moreover, the edges of the workpieces obtained by punching often have defects such as burrs, which require subsequent processing to improve surface quality. The deep drawing process causes plastic deformation of the material, transforming the circular blank into a hollow part with a certain shape and size through the action of the mold. With reasonable process design, the material utilization rate is high. The surface of the deep drawn part is relatively smooth, but due to the uneven distribution of stress and strain during the deep drawing process, defects such as wrinkling and tearing are prone to occur.
