This custom 3-way corner bracket is a heavy-duty structural node designed for outdoor pergolas, timber framing, and modular architectural assemblies. Engineered from 2mm square tubing, this 200x150x160mm connector securely joins three perpendicular structural posts, providing immense torsional rigidity and load-bearing capacity for overhead canopies and frameworks.
Customer Requirement
An architectural canopy manufacturer previously struggled with generic timber connectors that suffered from two major defects: poor 90-degree alignment and internal weld spatter. The misaligned angles forced on-site installation crews to manually force and hammer timber posts into the brackets, while internal weld slag severely scratched or completely blocked the wood insertion. The client required an OEM metal fabrication partner to guarantee strict perpendicularity, perfectly aligned pre-drilled holes, and a completely unobstructed internal cavity for rapid, drop-in field assembly.
Material Selection
We specified 2mm Q235B carbon steel square tubing for this component. A 2mm wall thickness provides the optimal balance: it offers the high yield strength required to endure heavy wind loads and structural dead weight, yet remains lightweight enough to allow for safe overhead maneuvering by installers. Q235B carbon steel also delivers superior weldability, ensuring the critical 3-way intersection maintains maximum structural integrity without joint fatigue.
Manufacturing Process & Welding Solutions
To ensure absolute precision of the staggered mounting holes, we process the 2mm tubing using advanced CNC tube laser cutting. This technology cuts the lengths and the fastening holes in a single automated step, eliminating the tolerances lost during secondary drilling and ensuring every hole aligns perfectly with the client’s fastening hardware.
The primary engineering challenge is joining the three tubes without introducing internal weld spatter that would block the timber posts. To solve this, the cut tubes are locked into a custom 3-axis pneumatic welding fixture that guarantees a strict 90-degree alignment on all planes. Our welders utilize tightly controlled exterior MIG welding parameters, ensuring deep structural fusion on the outer seams while completely preventing thermal burn-through and slag accumulation on the interior walls.
Quality Control & Final Result
Following the welding phase, our QC team utilizes precision internal go/no-go block gauges. These dummy blocks are inserted into all three channels of the bracket to verify that the internal dimensions are perfectly clear and geometrically square. The units then undergo a multi-stage wash before being sealed in a highly durable, UV-resistant black powder coating to withstand harsh outdoor weather. The final custom steel brackets completely eliminated the client’s field-assembly issues, significantly reducing their on-site labor costs.
